New Holland Fiat's IT-enabled tractor is the company'It's a first-of-its-kind in the tractor industry and was built to meet a specific customer need: Monitoring the health of expensive tractors. "An IT-enabled device allows customers to keep a close check on the health of the engine and transmission, monitor fuel levels and consumption, and ensures that customers get their tractors serviced in time,"says Arora. "All these features are controlled through the software deployed as part of our private-cloud.” Customers—and the dealers who sold them their tractors—are alerted when a tractor needs to be serviced by SMS. Some of the parameters that are monitored, like the number of hours an engine has been in use, are especially useful for customers who rent out tractors. In addition, data sent back to New Holland product development team helps create better products. And the system makes it easier to dealers (who are also in-charge of servicing) to predict which parts they will need.
