" By taking the Open Source route, we have saved Rs 4.5 crore on proprietary software. "
It couldn't do that without adversely affecting platform efficiencies and organizational budgets with the available proprietary solutions in the market. To further the company's competitive edge, without increasing IT maintenance costs, or devising new ways to make the architecture scalable, robust and secure, Sarker decided to leverage the open source platform. Sarker migrated the company's core database to MySQL over a year back. This core database—that's worth a few terabytes—takes about 3.5 million transactional hits daily. More than 80 percent of DTDC's 3,000 desktops now run on Linux and OpenOffice, saving about Rs 4.5 crore on proprietary office automation applications. A major portion of the server platform was also migrated to open source-based OS and apps. Open source also helped the organization develop its business plan for the next five years.
